Good morning all.
I am looking for some advice and help please as I am not sure what is available.
I occasionally like all people with Diabetes have low BG and just recently I have been cycling home from work which is 4 miles. This of course burns up lots of Carbohydrates and in turn makes my BG low when I arrive home e.g. 4.0. I do try to have something like a banana before leaving work but this does not seem to be enough, I am looking for something quick and small to eat ?
I am also looking to find out what you eat or drink when you have a low BG as I tend to panic eat and eat sweets. Is there something more suitable that would easily fit in my pocket and work fast ?
Thanks for your time.

My Pump.
My Pump Blog.
Those miniature cans of coke really work for me. they are usually exactly the right amount and they seem to work very quickly.

Hi Hayley, sounds like a good idea and they are small. I have also tried jelly beans which also work well but can go a bit sticky after a while.
I have been trying to find something ultra small to fit in my pocket that works fast, have you tried Hypo Stop Gel as that is quite good ? Have you seen those Glucose Tablets and if so are they good ?
I always tend to panic when my BG is low by eating lots of Haribo sweets which I know is bad but they do taste nice – what a shame they don’t fit in my pocket ha ha !!
Thanks for the advice – may I ask how you found my Blog please ?
Best regards
Andrew

Fruit pastilles are my hypo weapon of choice. I buy them in bulk from the supermarket and secrete them about the place. 5 = 15g of carbs, they kick in quite quickly and they taste quite nice!

Hi Tim, yes love the fruit pastilles probably a bit too much to be honest . I am sure there is something out there which we are missing but not found yet.
So how is the pump – it does take some getting used to but I think it’s great and would not be without it.
I am looking forward to the next Medtronic meet for a good catch up.
Still tying to find my feet with this new WordPress Blog site as I am no expert – be good to get more comments and traffic so do let me know if you have any tips please.
Thanks again
Andrew

Dates – not to treat a hypo, but before you set out – you can just put 4-6 in a little bag in your pocket, takes moments to eat, and work really quick (I have them before I go to the gym). When hypo, I prefer to use glucotabs – you can get them in plastic tubes that fit nicely in a pocket so they dont get bashed about too much, and they work in minutes for me. You’re also unlikely to want to eat them when not hypo, as they aren’t a ‘sweet’ as such.
(Nice sharks, by the way.)

Hi Annette, well dates are certainly not something I would have thought of to be honest. Do you know how many carbs are in each date as this would really help me and do they work fast or slow ? I cycle 4 miles home from work but sometimes you just feel like getting on the cycle and getting on your way rather than eating, I have tried a banana a few times which seems to work ok. I will ceratinly give the dates a try next week and I have tried gluco tabs from Boots which do work well.
Annette, glad you like the sharks !!

Dates – I measured them once and then worked out that 6 dates was 15 grams carbs. They work pretty quickly – I stuff them in as I am on my way out of the door, and my bg is already up by the time I get to the gym, 5-10mins or so, I’d say.

Hi Annette – that is certainly something at the top of my shopping list as they sound ideal. I had a look
in Sainsbury’s today but none on the shelf but will certainly get some soon. Please forgive me if it sounds an odd question but the Dates you are speaking about – are theses the ones with big pips similar to what you have at Christmas or am I missing something ? Carbohydrate wise they sound ideal as I could have a few just before leaving work and they would hopefully work by the time I start to cycle.
Thanks again – much appreciated.

Yes, they’re the ones – only I buy the de-stoned ones (saves time and sticky fingers!). I get them from Tescos, or Julian Graves, am surprised Sainsbury’s didnt have any!

Hi, they are on my shopping list (Ready to eat from Sainsbury’s) so looking forward to giving them a try. Sounds like a good alternative to a Banana etc. Thanks again – I will keep you posted.
